Ocean Policy Short Course
Held by Stanford University's Center for Ocean Solutions' Monterey Area Institutions' Network for Education (MARINE), this ocean policy short course offered graduate students in the natural and social sciences an introduction to ocean policy and governance, and how science influences public policy decisions at the international, national and state levels. Participants learned about pressing challenges to ocean health, and together with leaders in ocean science and policy, examined how science and scientists can work with the policy-making process to address these challenges.
The course used urgent ocean policy issues, such as ocean acidification and fisheries management, to demonstrate the complexity of ocean-related decision-making. Participants examined the roles of natural science, social science, and government institutions in ocean management. Participants had the opportunity to engage with experts in ocean science and policy, and participate in field trips, group projects, and other interactive activities. Participants learned how to communicate with ocean policy makers and journalists through hands-on practical exercises. More information here.

Development Project Management Institute
DPMI participants develop the skills needed to design and monitor a basic development project. Specifically, participants learn to conduct logical framwork analyses and create results frameworks, while working closely with stakeholder groups. Participants also acquire the necessary competence to create and apply social entrepreneurship strategies—including inter-organizational partnering—to bring about meaningful and sustainable change in the lives of the very poor. Finally, in order to implement projects effectively, DPMI participants gain core skills for the training of trainers, for the resolution of conflicts through negotiation, and for helping stakeholder groups with their decision-making activities through skilled facilitation. More information here.
